It came out of nowhere. Like a bombshell that he never could’ve seen coming. And while that was mostly thanks to the delivery, Bruce still kicked himself for not noticing the signs sooner. But no, he had to be the oblivious idiot he was and have to get a very in-his-face announcement from ber.

The woman who was the reason he was sitting in a doctor’s office with Tony, waiting for results on his DNA exam.

It’d started with him just sitting on the couch, reviewing some of the calculations Tony’d put in place for some new enhancements on Mach 64. Nothing was really going on, it was chill in the flat, and he’d say all was well.

Until he heard a familiar sing-song voice, and a very familiar woman slid onto his lap out of literally nowhere.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Hey, baby.” (Name) hummed, straddling his hips and looping her arms around his neck. Bruce blinked, eyes wide in shock at the sight of his wife. Thanks to her mutation, he was able to turn invisible at will, among many other interesting features.

And by interesting, he meant extremely annoying/surprising-in-a-bad-way.

“Where’d you come from?” He asked, maintaining his composure and at least attempting to be unfazed. She chuckled, pecking his lips.

“Nowhere, as usual.”

“As usual.” He echoed, giving a small smile and wrapping his arms around her waist. “What’s up?”

“I have a request.” (Name) stated softly, settling on his lap. Bruce quirked an eyebrow, giving her a light squeeze.

"A request? What kind?" He inquired, making her head tilt to the side, biting her lip.

“A kind of...life changing one?”

“...Those usually aren’t good.” Bruce pointed out, making her giggle. Her lips found his again and again, making his brain go static for a couple seconds. He knew she was preparing to strike, but wasn’t about to stop her.

“This one’s really good. Trust me.” She promised, rubbing his shoulders sensually. He leaned back, humming in the sensations. She really knew how to work him, that was for sure. At least, when she wanted something from him.

“Mm...what is it?”

“I want a baby.”

He nearly choked on oxygen.

Bruce’s eyes flew open, and he jumped, nearly sending her flying to the floor. She yelped, windmilling to try and catch herself. He grabbed her hips, steadying her against him while trying to keep from completely freaking out. She laughed, despite the shocked look on his face.

“Y-You want a what?”

“I want a baby.” She repeated calmly. Bruce swallowed thickly, watching his wife for some sign that maybe she was joking. Because he highly doubted she realized what exactly she was getting into.

“Whyyy? A, um...a baby? Why do you want a b-baby?”

“Because we’ve been married for a year, and neither one of us have ever really had a family. And you know how I feel about that. Surely, you saw this coming.” (Name) reasoned, and Bruce knew she was right; Being abandoned by her parents because of her powers left a little hole in her heart that he knew she wanted to fill. And while starting a family would do the job, he had hoped in the back of his head that she’d realized the dangers of doing it with him. The Hulk.

“But what about complications? And t-the possibility of having a child with the same mutations as me? Or you? Or something completely different that we aren’t ready to deal with? It’s too dangerous to try and raise a-a kid. Especially with me, (Name).”

“If I couldn’t handle a child with powers, do you really think I’d be asking you to have one with me? So what if he’s a little green bean? I can handle it. And you can, too. You just teach them how to handle their anger. It’s no big deal.”

“I-I just don’t think it’s a good idea, honey.” Bruce breathed, still trying to comprehend the situation. “There’s just too much that we can’t see coming. There are so many big changes that can happen, and that’s just with normal kids. Imagine having super children. I just...I just don’t think it’s a good, er, idea. Um...a-at all.”

“Bruce…” She started carefully, her hands sliding from his shoulders to his cheeks. “Do you really think I would’ve asked you if I hadn’t thought it out?” Her eyes narrowed slightly, like they did when she was really concentrating, or really passionate. “I’ve gone to a dozen people. Even phoned Professor Xavier about this. Because I just wanted to be sure that if we go through with it, we’re prepared.”

“Who else did you talk to?”

“Wanda, Tony, Natasha, um... Ant-Man Scott, Cyclops Scott, Wade-”

“-Wade Wilson?”

“He’s surprisingly knowledgeable in the aspect of children.”

“He still is one.”

“True. Anyways, I got in touch with friends across a few galaxies and of course, Peter Parker’s aunt.”

“You covered all the bases, huh?” He half-joked, trying to brighten up his currently exploded brain. He was still fuzzy, trying to comprehend what was happening. She just snickered, burying her face in his neck.

“I wanted to make sure. I knew you’d be nervous. I’m nervous.” She admitted, but pressed a kiss to his forehead, soothing his racing heart. “But I want to try. Because I love you, and I love babies, and what better way to prove it than making our own? Of both?” She added, making his face flush.

“Are you...really sure? About doing this?” Bruce checked, sighing as he knew he wouldn’t get his way even if he wanted to. “There’s just so much risk involved…” He trailed off, gaze falling downwards.

“Hey, hey, hey.” (Name) whispered, guiding his face back to her. That smile was enough to melt his worries away. “We’ll be okay. I know we will. We always figure this stuff out, don’t worry. You trust me, don’t you?”

“Of course I do.”

“Then, you wouldn’t mind if we got started?”

“Got started?”

“Like, now?”

”Now?!”

“Let’s do it, baby.” She laughed, tugging him up from the couch and leading him towards the bedroom with tantalizing kisses. And the second they hit the bed, magic was made. ..And babies.

Or at least, they were supposed to be.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Excuse me, Dr. Banner. We’ve completed the exam.” One of the lab-coated men spoke as they came into the room. Tony glanced over at his friend, whose gaze was fixated on the man. He had a deep frown, and a sad look in his eyes. Not a good sign for either of the science bros.

“How am I?” He asked quietly. The last week had been strange. After all the...magic making...they’d been up to in the past month, they should’ve come up with something, by now.

But since (Name) seemed to be baby-less and feeling a smidge sick for a few days, he figured he’d run over to the doctor for a check up. She stayed home, since he didn’t want her moving about if she was puking her guts up.

And judging by the man’s face, he was glad she stayed.

“I’m sorry, sir. But I’m afraid that you’re...sterile.”

“...What?”

“You’re...incapable of having children. It could be genetic, or caused by an outside source, uh...radioactivity, x-rays, exposure to heavy metals, industrial chemicals...the list goes on and on.”

“N-No, it’s alright. ..I get it.” Bruce cut in, running a hand through his hair. Radioactivity. Tony stared at his friend, knowing full well the cause of it.

The accident.

’Even when he’s not here, the Other Guy’s still causing me trouble.’ Bruce thought bitterly, thanking the doctor before standing up numbly and leaving the office. Tony trailed behind him, taking care of the payments and things. He had a feeling Bruce wasn’t up for it.

“Bruce? How you feelin’, buddy?” Tony asked carefully, a hand on his shoulder. Bruce sighed heavily, arms folded tightly against his chest.

“I can’t. I don’t--” His jaw set, and muscles tensed. “What am I supposed to tell her? I can’t go home and tell her this. That I can’t...because of him. Me.”

“Tell her the truth. She’ll understand. This,” Tony paused, gesturing to his friend, “Is just a setback.”

“Not being able to have kids isn’t a setback. It’s a complete stop.” Bruce growled, the sorrow in his eyes betraying him. He buried his face in his hands, sinking down to the curb. Tony watched him, frowning deeply.

“(Name) will understand. But you’ve got to tell her about this. You can’t keep this kind of thing from her.”

“She won’t understand, Tony. You don’t get it. (Name)’s wanted kids for a while. Since before we got married. I always knew she would, but-- ..Now that she wants them, and she can’t have them, what do I do? What are we supposed to do, Tony?”

“Tell. Her.” He repeated, crouching in front of him and lowering his sunglasses to look Bruce straight in the eye. “You trust me on this, big guy. She’ll understand. I know she will. And you two can figure this out together. But right now, the best thing for you to do is get back to the Tower and talk to your wife. You got me?”

Bruce was quiet, lifting his face from his hands to look at Tony. “Y-Yeah. Yeah...okay.”

“Let’s head out, then. If you want I’ll go buy you some tacacá* down at that joint you two always go to.”

“N-No, thanks. I’d rather just get this over with while I’ve still got some dignity left.” Bruce mumbled, and Tony chuckled tiredly, helping his friend up and getting in the car, heading back home. Bruce couldn’t fight the destroyed feeling in his chest.

It sucked.

And it wouldn’t be any better when he told (Name).

~*~

“There really wasn’t any need for Bruce to go to the doctor. Since you’re the one who’s sick, anyways.” Wanda stated as the pair of women walked through the elevator, into the Banner Flat. (Name) just hummed, grinning brightly.

“Oh, don’t worry. I know perfectly well why I’m sick.” She replied with a sing-song tone, making Wanda stare at her.

“I’ve never seen someone so happy about puking every morning.”

“That’s because it’s not a stomach bug. It’s a baby.” (Name) said with a wink making Wanda stop in her tracks.

“Are you serious?”

“Uh, yeah! Why do you think we went to the store? We just bought a bunch of pregnancy tests.” (Name) told her matter-of-factly, and the girl mouthed an oh, following her friend into the bedroom.

“I thought those vere veird thermometers, or something.”

“You serious?” She laughed, the plastic bag stuffed with five different brands of tests crinkling in her hands. “You thought all of these were thermometers.”

“I-I don’t know! I’ve never had baby, before! How do I know vhat they look like? And vhy buy so many, anyvays??” Wanda protested, making her friend snicker.

“Because you can’t just trust one of them. You could get all sorts of different results, you know? I just want to be extra, extra, extra sure.”

“I suppose that makes sense.” Wanda agreed, glancing out the window. “So, vhen is Big Green coming back?”

“Don’t call him that.” (Name) chided, heading for the bathroom and shutting the door. “You know how he feels about it!”

“That’s vhy I don’t say it to man’s face. But I know I’m safe around you, so I say it as much I vant.” Wanda huffed, folding her arms as she fell back onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling. “How long vill this testing take?”

“Give me a little while. Five minutes, tops!” (Name) called back, and Wanda sighed, closing her eyes. May as well get a nap while she waited. Even if she didn’t want to admit it, she was pretty excited about possibly seeing a little (Name) running around. She could teach them magic, and how to manipulate people’s minds, and all sorts of fun stuff. She couldn’t wait.

“(Name)? ..I’m home.” Bruce’s voice suddenly entered the flat, and Wanda’s eyes opened, glancing out the bedroom into the hall.

“He’s back.” Wanda told her friend, who remained uncharacteristically silent in the bathroom. She just rolled her eyes, flopping back onto the comforter. She heard Bruce step into the room, feeling his eyes fall on her.

“Wanda? ..What are you doing in here?” Bruce asked, his tone sounding more downtrodden than usual. She shrugged, not bothering to look at him.

“Vaiting for your vife to get out of bathroom. She is busy.” She mused, sitting up and heading out of the room. “Is best you not disturb. She seems very ‘in the zone’.” She added, before disappearing from the flat. Bruce watched her go, her curious appearance distracting him for a second.

Hearing (Name) being in the bathroom returned his attention to the matter at hand. His matter. Bruce exhaled heavily, running his hand through his hair again as he sank onto the bed. His hands came together, and he leaned over, trying to figure out the best way to break the news to her gently.

As gently as one could when telling their baby-obsessed wife they were sterile.

“(Name)? You doing alright in there?” He mustered the courage to ask, looking at the shut door. He listened for an answer, brow furrowing when he didn’t get one. Slowly, he stood up, moving to open the door and check on his wife.

Until he heard her scream.

“OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH! YEEEES!!!” She practically screeched, the door flying open before Bruce could even react. She raced up to him, eyes wide in excitement.

“W-Whoa! What is it??” He managed, and she practically shoved her hands in his face, holding five very strange looking sticks up. He recognized them instantly. Pregnancy tests.

“LOOK! LOOK LOOK LOOK! IT WORKED!!” She exclaimed, happier than the moment he’d proposed. Bruce stared at her in disbelief. She was right; Every single test read positive.

“Are you...there’s no way.” He breathed, brain not functioning anymore.

“Why not? We tried really hard, remember? There’s no way I couldn’t have gotten pregnant! And I’ve got about ten more tests in there proving it, too!” She laughed, but Bruce still wasn’t smiling. She wasn’t sure if that worried her more or not.

“But...that’s not possible.”

“You said it again! How is it not possible? Use your eyes!” She smiled in confusion, trying to get it through his skull. ’Maybe he’s just in shock, or something.’ She figured, but he shook his head, sitting back down on the bed. He looked up at her, an almost defeated look in his eyes.

Scratch that. It was total defeat.

“Bruce?” She murmured quietly, settling herself down instantly. She sat next to him, searching for an explanation. He just shook his head, turning to face her slowly.

“(Name), I...when Tony and I went to the doctor, and they did the examination…”

“How’d it go?”

“They said that I was...that I can’t--” He broke off, sadness tugging at his frown. She felt her heart speed up, and it wasn’t because of her results.

“You can’t what, honey?”

“They said I’m...I’m sterile. ..Because of the gamma radiation. I’m sterile.” Bruce mumbled weakly. (Name) fell silent, staring at her husband. He took the silence as his cue to continue, nervously rubbing his wrists. “A-And I didn’t want to tell you because I know how much you wanted a kid! Tony said that I should but I was worried that you’d get upset. With me. I still am worried. I didn’t want to disappoint you, and I wanted to make you happy, b-but now I can’t, and-”

“Baby.” She cut him off, setting the tests aside and placing her hands on his shoulders. “Look at me. You didn’t disappoint me. I’m not disappointed, and I’m not upset. And I think those doctors are totally BS-ing you.”

“...You’re not? But...But they said…”

“There’s no way they’re right. I just dropped fifty bucks on dozens of pregnancy tests, and every single freakin’ one of them said I’m positive with a baby. Our baby. Sterile or not, you gave me a baby.” She said firmly, earning his gaze. She beamed at him, pressing her forehead against his.

“You...think so?”

“I’ve been throwing up for days, and again, fifty dollars for plenty of positives. So either those doctors suck at their jobs, or God exists and we’re having a miracle baby.” She giggled, kissing his nose and cheeks, and finally his lips.

Bruce had never felt so relieved in his entire life.

“Oh, my God.” He muttered, wrapping his arms around her tightly. “W-We’re really having a baby.”

“Really.”

“Really?”

“Really really!” She cried, holding him tight. Relief washed over his entire body, and a smile broke onto his exhausted face, that little twinkle of hope lighting up his heart again.

“We’re having a baby!” He repeated louder, making her laugh and pepper his face with kisses. It was all he could do to spin her around the room, laughing right along with her. Screw the doctors; Sterile or not, they just beat the odds. He did.

“If you really want, we can schedule an appointment to make sure.”

“As long as it’s not with the guys Tony brought me to.”

“Absolutely.” She grinned, planting her lips on his. “We’ll go wherever you want. Because I love you, and I love you.” She whispered, pressing a hand to her womb. Bruce couldn’t have smiled wider in that moment.

“I love you, too. And you.” His hand covered hers, and for a split second, everything was perfect. They only hoped it would stay that way forever. After all,

Miracles really do happen.

“...By the way, you might want to wash your shirt.”

“Why?”

“I was holding five used pregnancy tests.”

“...Oh. Right. ..Ew.”

“And I still haven’t washed my hands.”

“Double ew! Get off!”

“Aww, come on, Brucie. Don’t you just wanna hold my hand and cuddle me all day?”

“No.”

“The mother of your child and love of your life?”

“Not when she has pee hands.”

“Stop being so immature!”

“Stop being gross!”

“Touché, Brucie. Touché.”
